The Philippines needs to start developing its nuclear workforce years before a nuclear power plant becomes operational, according to Engr. Mark Gio Aliperio, project leader of the Nuclear Power Plant Simulator (NuSIM).

In an interview with The Manila Times during the 5th Science and Technology Fellows Convention on Wednesday, Aliperio said that workforce development for a nuclear energy program should begin at least nine years before plant operations, based on practices in other countries. NuSIM, he said, is a nuclear power plant simulator designed to complement classroom instruction by giving students and future workers practical experience based on the operation of an actual nuclear power plant.

The simulator can recreate different plant conditions, including normal operations and equipment failures, allowing students and future workers to practice how they would respond.
